The body considers ethanol, the official name of alcohol, as a toxic substance. Alcohol has an anaesthetising influence on the brain. The liver breaks down the alcohol. On average, it takes to the liver an hour up to an hour and a half to process the content of one standard glass of a alcoholic beverage.
If someone has many drinks, the alcohol and its break down products circulate in the blood stream for a long time, causing a hangover.

For instance, there is always some methanol, which is considerably poisonous. There are also the so-called "higher" alcohols. One of the skills in the profession of the distillers is to get rid of these unpleasant substances as much as possible.
HOW DOES ALCOHOL WORK
Ethanol (alcohol) comes via the oesophagus, the stomach and the small intestine to end up in the blood stream. Because the transformation of alcohol slowly elapses, a part of the alcohol ends up in the blood and it is spread over the whole body, including brain and liver. The absorption time varies from fifteen minutes to a few hours, depending on the filling of the stomach.

Body
The break down of alcohol produces no metabolites, which are useful to the body in the production of necessary substances, and is therefore no food. The notorious beer belly arises through the by-products of beer.
Mainly in the beginning of the small intestine alcohol is absorbed. The stronger the alcohol’s, the faster its absorption, but food will slow it down. In case of distilled liquids the peak in the blood is 45 till 60 minutes after ingestion, in case of beer, it can take hours. The biorhythm of the metabolism’s speed is unique: the same quantity of alcohol can be broken down on different moments of the day through one and the same person with different speeds. Brain
As soon as the alcohol reaches the brain, you feel that you have drunk: you become light headed. The alcohol will give a cheerful effect, or as the quantities are larger, it will give a numbing effect. After a few glasses, most people become more cheerful and talkative, since inhibitions are reduced. Moreover, alcohol influences the cerebral functions of perception, slows down the reflexes and decreases the co-ordination of the muscles. Alcohol abuse increases, in the long run, chances of brain damage, reduced memory, concentration and capacities of adaptation.

Liver
Alcohol is for the body a poisonous substance. The liver is the organ that breaks down all strange and toxic substances from the blood. The break down of a standard glass alcohol lasts one until one and a half-hour, whether it is beer or wine or distilled beverages. For instance, if someone takes four glasses, it will take the liver four to six hours to break down the alcohol. The speed of that break down cannot be increased by (despite all the bar talks): drinking coffee, eating a bread roll, moving vigorously, getting some fresh air or take a cold shower: Pity, but it doesn’t help at all.
THE ALCOHOL PROMILLAGES
The shape of glasses for alcoholic beverages is designed in such a way that each glass contains on average 10 grams of alcohol. In other words, 2 glasses of wine contain as much alcohol as 2 glasses of whisky. The level of alcohol is usually indicated by a volume percentage (vol.) translating the number of millilitres of alcohol per 100-millilitre liquid.
The blood alcohol concentration depends on the so-called partition volume. It is not possible to predict the blood alcohol concentration precisely, since the partition volume can vary (for instance by a weight of 80 kg it can vary from 42 until 56
litres). For the calculation, one can use the following formula:
Number of glasses X 10 grams / body weight X 0.72 (man) or 0.61 (woman)
The blood alcohol concentration authorised for participation to the traffic is in the Netherlands 0.5% in England and Germany 0.8%.
Women are generally faster intoxicated by alcohol than men, given that women mostly have more fat and less muscles than men. Muscle tissue contains more water than fat, therefore alcohol becomes more diluted in men’s bodies than in women’s. Female hormones constitute as well an influencing factor on the alcohol concentration in the blood.
The table below displays the blood alcohol concentrations per number of glasses per hour, for men with a body weight of respectively 60 kg and 80 kg:
EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL
The speed of drinking, the filling of the stomach, the body weight and the sex are of influence on the alcohol concentration in your blood. The effects of the increase of the alcohol levels can be:
1 to 3 glasses: cheerful and relax
Your pulse and breathing accelerate. Your blood vessels under the skin expand, which gives you a warm feeling. Your taste, smell and sight degrade somewhat and the sensation of pain is less easily felt. Your appetite increases and you must urinate more often.
3 to 7 glasses: boozed, tipsy, "a glass too much"
Your mood and behaviour change very clearly, you overestimate yourself. The anaesthetic effect on your natural restraints is clearly noticeable. Because of that you get the idea that alcohol stimulates you, while you actually become
anaesthetised. Your memory decreases. You also have more trouble judging situations and your reflexes collapse.
7 to 15 glasses: just "drunk" or loaded
All the above-mentioned physical effects become stronger. You become over emotional and your self-criticism disappears. Your face turns red and swells, your pupils become larger. The possibility of nausea and throwing up increases.
15 to 20 glasses: simply as tight as a drum
Your senses become anaesthetised. You are totally confused. You are absent, what you hear and what you see barely reaches you.
20 or more glasses: complete knockout
Your breathing and pulse slow down so much that you can fall into a coma, your breathing stops or you get a heart failure.
PHENOMENA OF A HANGOVER
The phenomena of a hangover are intense thirst (the dried-out feeling), perspiration, nausea to throwing up, burning acidity of the stomach, booming headache, dizziness,
diarrhoea, shaking hands, red eyes, irregular heart beats and tiredness.
They are especially caused by the alcohol drying out the body (alcohol stimulates the kidneys to remove extra moisture), by the toxic break down products of alcohol and by the disturbance of the mineral balance. Some substances that are added to the beverage (such as sulphite to wine) can aggravate a hangover. The quantity of alcohol someone can drink without having a hangover the next day differs from person to person. Booming headache...
One easily gets a hangover when one drinks too much alcohol, in a smoky, bad ventilated area and when one is tired.
ANTI HANGOVER TIPS
We know all sorts of tips to prevent a hangover, however much of those make totally no sense.
The nonsense about breaking down alcohol:
Walk around
Eat fish and chips
Contract the muscles
Drink very strong coffee
Continue the next morning where you left off
Here are also some well-known (so-called) hangover-killers, which also do not work. Here are a few of those "advises":
For this well-known recipe for two persons you need: 2 egg yokes, 2 teaspoons of sugar, 2 teaspoons of coffee powder, the juice of 2 oranges and ice cubes. Mix the egg yokes, the sugar and the coffee powder, then fill it up with the orange juice and finally add the ice cubes. Shake.
Bloody Mary is also a well-known hangover-killer. For one of the most famous drinks in the world you need: 1½ gin-glass with cooled vodka, 2 glasses of cooled tomato juice, a shot of Worchester sauce, salt, Tabasco, celery and black pepper. Shake everything well and bring it to your own taste with Tabasco before you serve it in a cocktail glass.
Coffee is also mentioned often, it works sobering and activates the blood circulation. But the alcohol level is not reduced, therefore do not take your car out for a ride. The day after as well, one has still a too high blood alcohol concentration.
Broth of chicken will also help, according to an old recipe; but the stomach is anyway upset, so why add more chaos? Nevertheless, chicken broth is good for draining of the body. Not reduced...
What rather helps as prevention of a hangover
In a good filled stomach alcohol is absorbed slower, but alcohol does not dissolve in fat. Water is neutral and can help the alcohol (only) to dilute. As hangover prevention, you can keep the following points in mind:
No fat and much water
Eat and drink sufficiently before hand
Drink slowly. Five small sips are better than one large, the body has more the time to process
Stick to one kind of drink, since different substances lift with different kinds of beverage and they may conflict with each other
Drink a lot between alcoholic beverages, in a proportion 1:2, preferably water, after each glass of alcohol (no matter which kind) two glasses of non-alcoholic drinks
What really helps?
Take during or immediately after alcohol consumption 4 until 6 capsules Paraxine, that promotes the break down of alcohol!
